I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my excitement about working with your child this year. As we embark on the 2017-18 school year and the new Expeditionary Learning Grade 6 ELA Curriculum, the overarching focus is to build students' literary skills as they develop knowledge about the world. Over the course of the year, we will explore four modules, often connected to science or social studies, which are designed to build knowledge through content-rich nonfiction. Each module will provide eight weeks of instruction, broken into three shorter units. The focus of these modules is the progression of literacy skills. Students will closely read a variety of complex text. Students will explore and apply themes through different texts and respond by writing for different purposes and audiences. Students will be encouraged to collaborate and engage in discussions with peers on different topics for a variety of reasons.
